Solenne — residences at Harbour Point

01Intent

Most towers are designed to be looked at. Solenne was designed to look out. We turned every floor three-quarters of a degree from the one below, wrapped the facade in two ribbons of glass winter gardens, and crowned it with a lantern that stays lit long after the harbour goes dark.

The plinth

Four storeys of honed travertine and bronze hold the lobby, a spa and a 25-metre pool deck that steps down to the promenade. At street level the stone pulls back behind a colonnade, so the tower meets the city at walking pace.

The turn

Fifty-nine residential floors, each rotated ¾° from the last. Over the height of the tower that adds up to 44°, so the harbour view drifts from west to south-west as you rise. Two ribbons of projecting glass oriels wind around the facade, one winter garden per floor.

The crown

The final level steps back into a glass lantern, ringed by eighteen-metre bronze fins. By day it is the residents' observatory. At night it is the one light on the skyline you can find from anywhere in the city.

    05Light

    Light,
    by the hour.

We modelled the sun across all 8,760 hours of the year before drawing a single wall. The twist does the rest: even in midwinter, every residence gets at least four hours of direct sun.
